Sen Imee Marcos says VP Sara Duterte impeachment trial not urgent, can wait till after SONA

Reelectionist Senator Imee Marcos stated on Saturday that the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte is not urgent and expressed support for holding the trial after the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 21.

Marcos, who opposes an immediate trial due to Senate's preoccupation with election preparations, noted that it was a collective decision made by the Senate.

She emphasized that while 'forthwith' in the Constitution means the next available session, she believes there is no urgency since the case has been pending for some time.

Marcos also said she sees no need to recuse herself from the trial despite her close ties with both President Marcos Jr. and Vice President Duterte.

The House of Representatives impeached Duterte on February 5, but the Senate adjourned without addressing the Articles of Impeachment transmitted that day.
