Iloilo mayor urges DOE, ERC to compel NGCP to address ongoing power outages

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas urged the DOE and ERC to compel NGCP to address ongoing power blackouts affecting Panay, Guimaras, and Negros since January 2.

Treñas criticized NGCP for its alleged inaction on repeated blackouts, stating that solutions identified by government agencies have not been implemented, including the completion of phase three of the Cebu-Negros-Panay (CNP) backbone project.

As of Thursday morning, more than 50 percent of affected municipalities still lacked electricity despite partial restoration efforts.

The mayor emphasized the need for NGCP to construct transmission lines and ensure stable power supply across Panay Island grid, citing concerns about future outages.

Treñas highlighted the suffering of residents due to prolonged outages and called on national government agencies with authority over NGCP to enforce its responsibilities.

Panay Energy Development Corporation is working with NGCP to restart generating units as soon as possible while investigations continue.
