Iloilo business permits delayed, PLDT non-compliant

Business permit renewals in Iloilo City are experiencing delays due to internet connectivity issues caused by a telecommunications provider's failure to comply with a local ordinance.

The ordinance, enacted in 2023, requires public utility and telecommunication companies to complete underground cabling by December 31, 2024 as part of an infrastructure improvement project.

Starting January 2, the City Engineer's Office began dismantling non-compliant lines and poles, including those of PLDT, which provides connectivity to Iloilo City Hall.

Local Economic Development and Investment Promotions Office head Velma Jane Lao reported that off-site centers struggled with city hall server connections, leading to slower transactions during business permit renewals on Friday.

PLDT has committed to restoring service quickly but the disruption affects the processing of 15,000 to 18,000 business permits.

Mayor Jerry Treñas expressed frustration over PLDT's failure to comply and emphasized the need for immediate action to restore internet service.
