GCGI seeks P3B ECC for Palinpinon 1 geothermal plant expansion

GREEN CORE Geothermal, Inc. (GCGI), a subsidiary of Energy Development Corp., plans to expand its Palinpinon 1 Geothermal Power Plant Project in Negros Oriental by P3 billion.

The expansion aims to increase the plant's capacity from 112.5 MW to 126 MW by replacing three existing turbine-generators, with no additional land or changes in technology required.

GCGI stated that two of the current turbines are nearing the end of their lifespan and need replacement within two to three years.

The new turbines will not increase emissions or condensate generation but will enhance efficiency, supporting renewable energy development under the Energy Reform Agenda.

GCGI seeks an environmental compliance certificate (ECC) from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), which is required before proceeding with the expansion.

The project is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2028, with the first turbine unit installation planned for the third quarter of 2027 and the remaining units by the first half of 2028.

This expansion will help meet Visayas grid needs while promoting sustainable energy growth in the country.
