French carrier strike group visits Philippines

French carrier strike group Charles de Gaulle has arrived in the Philippines for an unprecedented stopover, marking a milestone in defense cooperation between France and the Philippines.

The CSG includes the aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle, two multi-mission destroyers, an air defense destroyer, and the auxiliary oil replenishment ship Jacques Chevallier.

In Subic Bay, the Charles de Gaulle, an air defense destroyer, and the Jacques Chevallier are docked, while the two multi-mission destroyers are in Manila.

The visit underscores France's commitment to maritime security in the Indo-Pacific region alongside the Philippines, reflecting shared economic interests and mutual defense needs.

This stopover is part of the framework established by a December 2023 letter of intent signed between France and the Philippines to enhance military cooperation.

French Ambassador Marie Fontanel and high-ranking military officials will board Charles De Gaulle at sea on Friday as part of these interactions.

The visit also offers an opportunity for French crew members to engage with Filipino communities through cultural exchanges and basketball matches organized by NGO ANAK-TNK.
