Former POGO workers turn to online scams

Former Filipino workers at Philippine offshore gaming operators (POGOs) have turned to online scamming after learning the trade during their employment, a police official said on Wednesday.

Brigadier General Bernard Yang of the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group noted that many recently arrested for online scams had acquired the skills while working in POGOs and are now operating independently.

Information and Communications Technology Secretary Henry Aguda echoed concerns about former POGO workers transitioning to financial crimes and hacking after losing their jobs, emphasizing collaboration with the police on digital infrastructure and cyber training.

From December 2024 to June 20, 2025, the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group arrested 608 individuals for various cybercrimes, with 116 convictions.

The PNP is also collaborating with other stakeholders by supporting initiatives such as Scam Vault PH initiated by Scam Watch Pilipinas to combat scams.
