Independence Day rallies defy warnings, police threaten arrests

Despite warnings from authorities, protesters gathered for Independence Day rallies in UP Diliman on Friday, June 12.

Police checkpoints were set up along Commonwealth Avenue to check people entering the campus, while QCPD vehicles patrolled the area.

QCPD chief Brig Gen Ronnie Montejo warned that arrests would be made if crowds did not disperse upon order.

PNP chief Gen Archie Gamboa earlier said they would strictly enforce a ban on rallies, backed by Justice Sec Menardo Guevarra's reference to penal sanctions under public health laws.
