Senate President Escudero welcomes Duterte's arrest, calls for calm

Senate President Francis 'Chiz' Escudero welcomed Interpol's peaceful implementation of the arrest warrant against former president Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday, March 12.

Escudero praised law enforcement, legal representatives, and supporters for their orderly conduct during the execution of the warrant, highlighting the Philippines' commitment to international treaties.

Duterte was arrested upon his arrival at Ninoy Aquino International Airport from Hong Kong and has been flown to The Netherlands Tuesday night to face charges related to alleged crimes against humanity.

Escudero emphasized that the ICC must respect Duterte's rights and ensure due process in accordance with the Rule of Law.

The Senate leader urged sobriety among the public, noting that diverse reactions will arise from differing perspectives on the allegations.

He also called for restraint from those running in the midterm elections to avoid using the issue for personal or political gain.

Escudero stressed the importance of demonstrating national strength through unity and peaceful upholding of justice and accountability.
