Escudero calls for restraint on Duterte arrest in elections

Senate President Francis Escudero called for restraint in using the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte as a political issue during the upcoming midterm elections.

Duterte was arrested on Tuesday following an ICC warrant related to alleged crimes against humanity during his presidency and time as mayor of Davao City.

Local authorities served the arrest warrant upon Duterte's arrival at Ninoy Aquino International Airport after a trip to Hong Kong, and he was flown out from Villamor Airbase in Pasay.

The senate chief expressed hope that the ICC would respect Duterte's rights and ensure due process as required by law.
