Palace urges strict action on fake news, NBI investigates 20 suspects

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin emphasized on Thursday the importance of prosecuting those who spread fake news, noting its severe consequences for both the Philippines and the world.

Bersamin stressed in a Malacañang interview that the rise of misinformation is extremely detrimental to the country and globally, urging strict actions against fake news peddlers.

NBI Director Jaime Santiago confirmed they are investigating at least 20 individuals suspected of being part of an organized network propagating false information, particularly targeting government officials and political personalities.

The NBI has sought assistance from Interpol to track down overseas Filipinos spreading misinformation due to legal complexities in countries like the United States where libel is treated as a civil case.

The National Bureau of Investigation is coordinating with various government agencies including the Department of Information and Communications Technology and the National Telecommunications Commission.

Bersamin said that the Palace would let the NBI take appropriate actions against fake news peddlers, emphasizing the need for coordination to avoid contradictions.
