Enrile criticizes Duterte on maritime issues

Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile criticized former President Rodrigo Duterte's handling of maritime issues with China on State-run Radyo Pilipinas, stating that despite peaceful relations, Duterte failed to secure Philippine interests in the West Philippine Sea.

Enrile emphasized that international law is insufficient without military means to enforce claims over disputed waters, noting China's significant military advantage.

He highlighted the need for increased security presence in northern Luzon to protect the resource-rich Benham Rise from potential Chinese encroachment.

Enrile also stressed the importance of securing the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) area under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA), which plays a crucial role in national defense and regional stability.

The former senate president called for further actions to safeguard Philippine interests in the West Philippine Sea, recognizing the strategic value of the Benham Rise as a potential source of energy.
