Marcos Cabinet undiscussed ban on illegal POGOs

The Marcos Cabinet has not yet discussed calls to ban illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) in the country, according to National Economic Development Authority Secretary Arsenio Balisacan.

Balisacan stated that while POGOs generate revenue for the government, the social costs associated with the industry are high and could tarnish the country's reputation as a legitimate business destination.

Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said his department is now profiling workers in the POGO industry to address potential negative effects of banning these operators.

Finance Secretary Ralph Recto expressed interest in recommending a halt to POGO operations due to recent issues involving illegal activities by some POGO companies.

Senate leaders including Francis Escudero, Jinggoy Estrada, and Loren Legarda have expressed support for a possible ban on illegal POGOs.

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has stated that criminal syndicates operating as POGO hubs pose national security risks and should be stopped.

Senator Risa Hontiveros called for swift action from the Executive Department and Senate leadership to address crimes related to the POGO industry.
