Reporter threatened by La Paz mayor after shooting report

Romeo Gonzales, a DZRH provincial news correspondent, reported to the Philippine National Police in Baguio City on Wednesday, April 23, that he was threatened by La Paz, Abra Mayor Joseph 'JB' Bernos.

Gonzales alleged that Bernos made the threats after reporting on a shooting incident involving Abra candidates on April 21 for DZRH News, which resulted in one death and another person injured.

The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) condemned the threats 'in strongest terms,' expressing concern over how such intimidation sends a chilling effect and contributes to a culture of impunity.

Election violence in Abra has prompted the Philippine National Police to reactivate a task force there that will focus on ensuring peace and order during the election period.

The National Press Club also condemned the threats, urging stakeholders including PTFoMS to investigate and address the incident.
