DSWD's Walang Gutom Program reduces hunger among beneficiaries
The Department of Social Welfare and Development's Walang Gutom Program is showing positive results in reducing hunger among beneficiaries, according to a nationwide impact evaluation study conducted by the Social Weather Stations.
Secretary Rex Gatchalian expressed satisfaction with these findings during a food redemption activity for WGP beneficiaries in Tondo, Manila on Friday.
The SWS study, commissioned by Globe and DSWD, covered 3,991 respondents from 33 provinces and found that hunger levels among enrolled households dropped from 48.7% to 44.6% between October and December 2024.
While the program has been effective in reducing hunger, severe food insecurity remains a challenge for both beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries, though it increased less sharply among those receiving support.
The study also highlighted that severe hunger, where individuals go without food for entire days, declined significantly among beneficiaries over the program period.
Gatchalian thanked Globe for its partnership in aiming to reduce hunger among Filipinos through sustained food assistance.
