DSWD releases PHP100K gifts to 982 Central Visayas centenarians
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) reported on Wednesday that PHP98.2 million has been released as cash gifts to 982 centenarians in Central Visayas.
Under Republic Act 10868, or the Centenarian Act of 2016, each centenarian receives a PHP100,000 cash gift along with a felicitation letter from the Philippine President and posthumous recognition for those who pass away after their birthday.
Regional Director Shalaine Marie Lucero noted that as of the third quarter of 2024, DSWD has served 77 centenarians with benefits under the law, distributed across Bohol (273), Cebu (462), Negros Oriental (212), and Siquijor (35).
Lucero urged families to coordinate with local social welfare offices or senior citizens affairs offices for information on requirements and processes ahead of a family member's 100th birthday.
In 2025, the implementation of RA 10868 will transfer from DSWD to the National Commission of Senior Citizens (NCSC), along with the Expanded Centenarians Act, which grants cash gifts for age milestones of 80, 85, 90, and 95.
DSWD aims to personally hand over the cash gift before or during centenarians' birthdays to honor their contributions to the nation.
