DPWH reports PHP5B damage from monsoon and TCs

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported that close to PHP4 billion worth of damage has been inflicted upon public infrastructure in five regions due to the combined effects of southwest monsoon and Tropical Cyclones Crising, Dante, and Emong.

As of Sunday, July 28, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) updated the total cost damage to PHP5 billion, with flood control structures accounting for PHP4.19 billion, national roads for PHP913 million, and bridges for PHP148 million in eight affected regions.

The DPWH Quick Response Teams have reopened 35 national road sections but 19 remain closed due to various issues such as soil collapse and flooding, while 37 other sections have limited access.

Secretary Manuel Bonoan reported that close to 10,000 flood control projects have been completed over the last three years, providing immediate relief especially in low-lying areas across the country.

Over 5,000 ongoing flood control projects are expected to be completed by 2026, addressing major river basins and contributing to long-term solutions for flooding issues.
