DND Sec Teodoro stresses AWACS, tanker needs for MRF program

Department of National Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. stressed that the proposed multi-role fighter (MRF) program must include an airborne warning and control system (AWACS) capability to ensure operational effectiveness.

Teodoro emphasized that AWACS is crucial for making MRF jets operational as a force package, noting that many countries have realized the need for such systems despite having satellite capabilities.

The defense chief highlighted the necessity of acquiring tankers and sustainment funds along with MRFs, stressing the importance of adequate reserves of munitions per aircraft to maintain operational readiness.

Securing funding from the Department of Finance and the Department of Budget Management remains essential for procuring not only MRFs but also necessary support equipment like AWACS aircraft and aerial tankers.

The Philippine military is reviewing proposals for the purchase of MRFs, with Defense Secretary Teodoro maintaining that continuous coordination with financial departments is crucial for sustaining funding.
