DND chief criticizes Chinese vessel activity near Ayungin Shoal

Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. criticized an increase in Chinese vessel activity near Ayungin Shoal on Friday.

Teodoro stated that these actions violate international law and are part of a false narrative, urging the Philippines to stand firm against such activities.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) reported observing five China Coast Guard vessels along with numerous smaller craft and aerial assets in the area last August 20.

Some Chinese vessels were seen conducting maneuvers involving water cannons and were upgraded with mounted weapons, including heavy crew-served weapons.

Teodoro emphasized that while Philippine alliances remain strong, unilateral activities by China are beyond control and must be deterred to uphold international law.

The Philippines has previously won a legal ruling in The Hague against Chinese claims in the South China Sea, but China does not recognize this decision.
