Dizon eyes extending MRT-3, LRT operating hours

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon expressed openness to extending operating hours for MRT-3 and LRT systems to improve commuter experience during a press conference in San Juan City on Tuesday, February 25.

Dizon emphasized the importance of longer operational hours for passenger welfare, noting that increasing them by two hours could significantly reduce long queues and is considering midnight or even 2 AM extensions.

Acknowledging maintenance concerns, Dizon said he will discuss with railway operators within the week to explore feasible solutions and push for greater investment in train cars.

Previously, DOTr under Jaime Bautista deemed extending operating hours as not feasible due to potential maintenance issues; however, Dizon aims to find ways to improve passenger welfare despite these challenges.

Regular MRT-3 hours currently range from 4:36 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., while LRT1 and LRT2 have slightly varying schedules with earlier morning starts and later evening closures on weekdays compared to weekends.
