DFA summons Chinese amb over Tolentino sanctions

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) summoned Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian last Friday, July 4, to convey the Philippines' concern over China's imposition of sanctions against former Senator Francis Tolentino.

Philippine officials expressed their disapproval at a Palace briefing, emphasizing that punitive measures against democratically elected officials for official acts are inconsistent with mutual respect and dialogue between sovereign states.

China defended its decision, stating it is within its legal prerogative to sanction Tolentino for remarks detrimental to China's interests and relations, as conveyed by the Chinese Embassy in Manila on Tuesday.

The DFA reminded the Chinese side that as a democracy, the Philippines upholds freedom of expression and legislative independence, allowing senators to inquire on matters of national interest.

Tolentino welcomed the sanctions as a 'badge of honor', asserting that no foreign power can silence him or weaken his resolve to uphold Philippine sovereignty.

The DFA remains committed to addressing differences through diplomacy and dialogue, looking forward to continued constructive engagement with China to promote mutual understanding.
