DepEd ramps up support for teachers as poll workers

The Department of Education (DepEd) has intensified preparations to support thousands of teachers and education personnel who will serve as poll workers in the upcoming May 12, 2025 national and local elections.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized that teachers are essential for upholding democracy and deserve full support from the government.

A memorandum of agreement was signed with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), and other partners earlier this month to coordinate efforts during the elections, in line with President Marcos' directive.

DepEd's Election Task Force (ETF) will provide real-time monitoring, assistance, and incident response nationwide, while a command center in Makati City will oversee operations from May 11 to 13.

Teachers serving as poll workers are entitled to honoraria, overtime pay, or compensatory time off based on their employment status and government rules, with the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) offering legal assistance for those who may face complaints during election duties.

Clear guidelines have been issued to maintain political neutrality and prohibit electioneering activities, with legal and medical assistance provided for those deployed during the elections.
