DENR urges LGUs to enforce RA 9003 on solid waste

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has urged local government units (LGUs) to enforce Republic Act No. 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act, amid growing concerns about uncollected trash in Metro Manila following the holidays.

The DENR emphasized that proper waste management is crucial for public health and environmental protection, noting the NSWMC's power to investigate and recommend legal actions against LGUs failing to comply.

RA 9003 requires LGUs to develop, implement, and enforce solid waste management plans approved by the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC), which has taken steps to ensure compliance with the law.

While 89 percent of LGUs nationwide have submitted and received approval for their plans, including all 17 in Metro Manila, the DENR called on local officials to intensify their efforts.

The DENR also offered technical assistance to LGUs facing difficulties with implementation, underscoring its commitment to support effective waste management practices.
