DA launches expanded 'Benteng Bigas' for fisherfolk

An estimated 2.9 million fisherfolk will be able to avail of up to 50 kilograms or five months worth of their allocation of P20-per-kilogram rice under the 'Benteng Bigas, Meron Na!' program.

DA Assistant Secretary and Spokesperson Arnel de Mesa said that fisherfolk can buy up to 10 kilograms of rice per month or a one-time purchase of 50 kilograms.

De Mesa also mentioned during an interview on GMA Super Radyo DZBB that fisherfolk have the option to buy a whole sack if they have the budget, or choose smaller quantities based on their needs and timing.

President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. previously stated his intention to expand the Benteng Bigas program to ensure more sectors of the population can access cheaper rice.

The program initially launched in the Visayas last April and now covers at least 162 locations across the country, offering subsidized rice.
