CSC encourages BHWs to apply for career service eligibility

The Civil Service Commission (CSC) is encouraging barangay health workers (BHWs) to apply for career service eligibility, which can be used when applying for permanent positions in the government.

In accordance with Republic Act No. 7883 and CSC Resolution No. 992845, BHWs who have completed at least two years of college education and provided five years of continuous voluntary service are eligible to apply.

CSC Chairperson Karlo Nograles emphasized the importance of BHWs as vital frontliners in primary healthcare services and said that the eligibility is a recognition of their dedication to public service.

In Ilocos Norte, BHWs like Mhing Alupay Garaza are delighted with this initiative, which recognizes their hard work and can motivate more individuals to serve as BHWs knowing they may secure permanent government positions.

The provincial health officer of Ilocos Norte, Dr. Rickson Balalio, thanked BHWs for assisting in the health programs of villages during times like the COVID-19 pandemic.

A total of 3,846 BHWs continue to serve the 559 villages in Ilocos Norte with more than 600,000 population as of the latest census, receiving a quarterly honoraria amounting to PHP600-PHP1,100 and an annual honorarium from their village budgets.

Government agencies are mandated to give preference to accredited BHWs in hiring health personnel if they meet the qualifications for the position.
