Cotabato Gov Mendoza, MILF launch peace programs

Cotabato Governor Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza and leaders from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) are set to launch more peacebuilding programs in support of national government efforts.

During a meeting on July 23, Mendoza, MILF chairman Ahod Ebrahim, and BARMM education minister Muhaquer Iqbal discussed continued cooperation in peace and security initiatives within recognized 'peace zones'.

Sixty-three barangays in Cotabato province were designated as Special Geographic Areas (SGA) under the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) following a 19 referendum.

The leaders emphasized their commitment to fostering peace and sustainable development in MILF-dominated areas, previously scenes of conflict between MILF guerrillas and military forces.

Mendoza's visit to Camp Darapanan last Wednesday underscored the ongoing collaboration between her provincial government and local commanders of the MILF.

Mr. Iqbal highlighted that despite the 63 SGA barangays no longer being under Mendoza’s jurisdiction, humanitarian support continues to be extended to residents in these areas.
