Comelec keeps Albuera off red list despite shooting

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) ruled out placing Albuera, Leyte under the red category of election areas of concern despite a recent shooting incident involving mayoral candidate Kerwin Espinosa.

Comelec Chairperson George Garcia stated that based on PNP investigations, individuals responsible for the shooting have been identified and are in custody.

Seven police officers are currently held as persons of interest following the shooting; they are in custody for investigation.

Espinosa was shot in the right shoulder while attending a campaign event but is expected to recover.

As of March 19, Comelec has placed 36 areas under the red category, indicating serious security concerns.

The PNP and Armed Forces of the Philippines classify all areas into four categories: green (peaceful), yellow (history of incidents), orange (serious threats from armed groups), and red (heightened risk of violence).

Comelec maintains that Albuera's situation does not warrant an escalation to the red category, emphasizing the importance of avoiding undue alarm.
