Comelec affirms Abante Jr.'s win in Manila's 6th District

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) en banc has dismissed Luis 'Joey' Chua Uy's motion for reconsideration, affirming its earlier decision that he is a naturalized Filipino citizen and not qualified to be the Member of the House of Representatives for Manila's 6th District.

Bienvenido 'Benny' Abante Jr., who garnered the highest number of votes, has been declared the duly elected representative of Manila's 6th district.

Comelec ruled that Chua Uy failed to meet the natural-born citizenship requirement because his father was a Chinese national at the time of his birth and only became a naturalized Filipino citizen later.

Despite Chua Uy’s arguments that he is a natural-born Filipino based on his mother's nationality and his lifelong activities as a Filipino citizen, Comelec maintained its decision citing constitutional authority to protect election integrity.

The electoral body directed Manila's Board of Canvassers to reconvene and officially proclaim Abante Jr. as the district's representative.
