CHR condemns murder of journalist Juan 'Johnny' Dayang in Aklan

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) strongly condemned the attack that resulted in the death of veteran journalist Juan 'Johnny' Dayang inside his home in Kalibo, Aklan on April 29.

An unidentified gunman shot three shots at Dayang from outside his fence before fleeing on a motorcycle; Dayang was rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead upon arrival.

Dayang, president of the Publishers Association of the Philippines Inc. and former publisher of the Philippine Graphic and columnist for Manila Bulletin Publishing Corp., had a distinguished career in journalism.

The CHR deployed a Quick Response Operation Team to investigate the incident independently as part of its commitment to ensuring media workers' safety.

Law enforcement agencies promptly responded with an immediate investigation into Dayang's murder.

The CHR urged all journalists to report threats or attacks through Alisto! Alert Mechanism, an initiative aimed at safeguarding media welfare and providing a direct channel for raising concerns about safety.

In conclusion, the CHR expressed condolences to Dayang's family and stressed the importance of protecting press freedom and ensuring journalists can work safely.
