DA to offer cheaper rice in Metro Manila supermarkets starting Feb

The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced that cheaper rice options under the Kadiwa ng Pangulo Rice for All program will be available in supermarkets across Metro Manila starting the second week of February.

Following a meeting between DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. and major supermarket chains on January 21, there is agreement to sell RFA 5 (PHP45/kg), RFA 25 (PHP38/kg), Sulit rice (RFA 100 at PHP36/kg), and P29 rice (PHP29/kg) in supermarkets and convenience stores.

Details such as the timeline for implementation are still being finalized by the DA, with FTI handling supply and packaging through participating retail chains.

Prices may vary slightly due to possible markup for packaging, with some outlets potentially selling RFA options in two-kilogram bags at a slight premium of PHP1/kg compared to sacks.

In addition to over 20 operating KNP centers in local public markets and select LRT/MRT stations, the DA is collaborating with Metro Manila mayors to expand KNP stores into 150 public and private markets.

The agency plans to roll out mobile KNPs based on requests from some local government units.

With over 3,200 retail outlets, including SM, Robinsons, 7-Eleven, Puregold, and MerryMart, the DA sees these networks as crucial in reaching millions of consumers daily.
