BOC removes online tax calculator for improvements

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has temporarily removed its online duty and tax calculator from its website to allow for system improvements following an incident involving actress Bella Padilla.

Padilla had questioned a PHP4,600 charge for her PHP11,000 shipment, which differed significantly from the PHP1,650 shown by the ODTC.

BOC Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno directed that the calculator be taken down until enhancements are completed to provide a more comprehensive breakdown of charges.

Nepomuceno acknowledged that the current system does not reflect all lawful charges required by law and may cause confusion when compared with final assessments.

The BOC is developing an improved version of the tool that will regularly update prevailing rates, providing clearer information on total dues as per President Marcos Jr.'s directive.

Commissioner Nepomuceno expressed gratitude for public feedback like Padilla's, noting its importance in improving government services and transparency.
