BOC chief apologizes for flawed tax calculator

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) chief apologized for confusion caused by its online tax calculator after actress Bela Padilla raised concerns about duties on her online purchase.

Nepomuceno acknowledged the public's concerns and promised to work on an improved version of the tool.

Padilla had pointed out that she was asked to pay nearly triple the amount in duties compared to what the calculator initially indicated for her P11,000 shampoo purchase.

The BOC clarified that while the calculator provides estimates, it does not reflect all lawful charges required by law, leading to misunderstandings.

To prevent similar issues, Nepomuceno directed the removal of the current calculator until enhancements are completed and a clearer system is in place.

The agency stated that constructive feedback helps them better serve the public and strengthen transparency.

Bela was commended for raising her concerns 'calmly and professionally', according to the BOC.
