Ateneo beats UP in five sets in women's volleyball

Ateneo de Manila University secured its first victory in UAAP Season 86 by defeating the University of the Philippines (UP) in women's volleyball with a score of 22-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-9 on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Coach Sergio Veloso praised his team's resilience and strong mental game after overcoming a two-set deficit to clinch victory against UP, who are now led by former Ateneo coach Oliver Almadro as both coach and program director.

Lyann De Guzman led Ateneo with a career-high 24 points, while Sobe Buena contributed significantly with 18 points, including an efficient 50-percent spiking rate.

Buena credited her teammates for her performance, emphasizing the importance of teamwork in overcoming challenges and securing the victory.

Steph Bustrillo led UP with 17 points, but the Fighting Maroons suffered their 14th consecutive loss since Season 85.

Despite facing a years-long talent exodus, Ateneo's victory highlights the team's resilience and strong mental game, as they continue to search for that next big star to carry them back to relevance.
