5 convicted for 2013 Cubao kidnapping of minors

A Quezon City court has convicted five individuals for kidnapping two minors in Cubao in July 2013, with three of the accused receiving sentences of reclusion perpetua without parole eligibility and two others getting sentences ranging from 10 to 17 years.

The victims, aged 10 and 15 at the time of abduction on July 5, 2013, were taken by armed men while traveling in a vehicle along EDSA. A nationwide alarm filed by their mother helped track down the suspects and recover the minors without ransom paid.

Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla highlighted that this conviction demonstrates the effectiveness of the DOJ prosecution service even in complex cases.

The court ordered the convicts to pay P100,000 each in civil indemnity and moral damages to the victims. The case against one accused was dismissed due to his death during trial, while two others remain at large.
