119 rescued after MV Monreal fire, cause electrical short circuit

A total of 119 people were safely rescued after a passenger-cargo vessel caught fire near San Andres, Quezon.

The fire on board MV Monreal was caused by an electrical short circuit in a crew cabin while the ship was en route to Aroroy, Masbate.

The blaze was quickly contained and power was restored by a licensed electrician onboard, allowing the vessel to dock safely at 10:49 p.m. in San Andres Port.

All passengers and crew members underwent medical checks and were confirmed to be in good condition.

The Philippine Coast Guard has detained the vessel and instructed the Master to submit a Marine Protest and collect sworn statements from those on board.
