Marikina mayor orders release of feeding program volunteers

Ten volunteers of a community kitchen feeding program were arrested on Friday, May 1, while serving free meals to disenfranchised jeepney drivers in Marikina City.

Marikina Mayor Marcelino Teodoro ordered their release later that day after determining the police had overreacted.

The volunteers included seven jeepney drivers, two teachers, and a Gabriela community volunteer.

They were part of the Bayanihang Marikenyo at Marikenya group which has been providing food to poor communities since mid-March.
