NCCA, Knowledge Channel launch new "Wikaharian" episodes to boost literacy

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI) have launched 25 new episodes of "Wikaharian," an educational television program for Grade 2 learners.

The animated series features interactive video lessons, sing-alongs, and short stories narrated in Filipino, aiming to enhance reading skills and promote Filipino culture and identity.

This initiative hopes to address the Philippines' growing literacy crisis, highlighted by poor reading comprehension and declining fundamental skills among students.

A study by the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2) revealed that public students are four to five years behind expected literacy levels, a crisis worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Knowledge Channel Foundation president and executive director Rina Lopez stated that the series aims to improve reading and writing skills in Filipino while fostering a connection to Filipino identity and values.

Senator Loren Legarda, through the NCCA, provided support for the series, emphasizing the importance of embedding culture and creativity in education.
