WHO urges PH to recruit more volunteers for COVID-19 vaccine trial

The World Health Organization (WHO) is urging the Philippines to increase its commitment to the global COVID-19 vaccine trial by pledging more volunteers.

WHO Country Representative Rabindra Abeyasinghe expressed hope that the Philippines would aim for up to 4,000 participants, exceeding the current target of 2,000 to 3,000.

He emphasized that a larger number of participants globally will accelerate the process of determining the safety and efficacy of potential vaccines.

Twelve hospitals across Metro Manila, Cavite, Cebu City, and Davao City have been identified as trial sites, chosen for their high COVID-19 transmission rates.

Participants will be between 18 and 60 years old, with exclusions for pregnant women and those with comorbidities to ensure vaccine safety is thoroughly evaluated.

The WHO is still finalizing which candidate vaccines will be included for the trial in the Philippines.

The Philippine government has allocated P89 million for the Solidarity Trial, a global effort to develop and evaluate possible COVID-19 vaccines.
