Philippine Navy denies retired Sgt Guteza is under their protection

The Philippine Navy denies that retired Marine Sergeant Orly Guteza is under the protection of the Philippine Marines, as he retired from the Marine Corps in June 2020 and is no longer under their administrative authority.

Navy spokesperson Capt. Marissa Martinez clarified that any engagements or interactions Guteza has are in his personal capacity and the Marine Corps has no involvement in his personal affairs.

This statement addresses claims made by former lawmaker Mike Defensor that Guteza sought protection from the Marines after testifying before the Senate blue ribbon committee and opting out of the Department of Justice's witness protection program.

Guteza, who emerged as a 'surprise witness' in the Senate's flood control projects corruption probe, claimed to be a former security consultant for former Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co.

He alleged that he personally delivered suitcases of money to the residences of Co and Leyte 1st District Representative Martin Romualdez, both of whom have denied the allegations.
