VSMMC chief: Unvaccinated most at risk for COVID-19 deaths

Dr. Gerardo Aquino, the medical chief of Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC), urged the public in Cebu City to get vaccinated against COVID-19, emphasizing that most deaths and severe cases are among the unvaccinated.

Aquino reported that all five recorded COVID-19 deaths as of July 28 were unvaccinated individuals.

Out of 113 confirmed COVID-19 patients admitted to VSMMC, 94 were unvaccinated, indicating a higher risk for those who have not received the vaccine.

While vaccination is crucial, Aquino clarified that it does not provide 100% protection against infection, especially with high viral load exposure.

However, vaccinated individuals are more likely to experience asymptomatic or mild symptoms, whereas unvaccinated individuals are prone to moderate, severe, or critical illness.

Aquino advised the public to accept any available COVID-19 vaccine.

As of July 29, COVID-19 cases occupied 22% of VSMMC's total bed capacity.
