Mary Jane Veloso's family urges SC to expedite cases vs traffickers

The family and supporters of Mary Jane Veloso have urged the Supreme Court to expedite her cases against her alleged recruiters and traffickers, Maria Cristina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao, pending before the Sto. Domingo, Nueva Ecija Regional Trial Court Branch 89.

The pending cases involve human trafficking, estafa, and violation of the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipinos Act.

In a letter to the high court, Veloso's parents, Celia and Caesar Veloso, along with the migrant group Migrante, requested the resolution of the case against her traffickers, emphasizing exceptional circumstances and humanitarian considerations.

They also appealed to the court to allow Mary Jane to testify via hearings at the Correctional Institution for Women, as these have faced repeated postponements.

Mary Jane, an overseas Filipino worker convicted of drug trafficking in Indonesia, returned to the Philippines in 2024 after serving 14 years in prison, nine of which were on death row, and remains in detention.

Her parents have also appealed to President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. for clemency, hoping she can return home soon.
