Veloso family asks Marcos Jr. for clemency

Family and supporters of Mary Jane Veloso renewed their plea for clemency and her freedom, urging President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to grant her release.

Her parents submitted a petition to President Marcos Jr. on Friday, hoping for her clemency before his fourth State of the Nation Address on July 28.

Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro stated that while the President has yet to receive the letter, a positive reaction is likely if it aligns with laws and the welfare of Filipinos.

Veloso was transferred back to the Philippines in December 2024 after the Philippine and Indonesian governments agreed to her return following 10 years of diplomacy.

She was convicted of drug trafficking in 2010 and was a death row inmate in Indonesia before her transfer.

Veloso was arrested in 2010 at Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta with over 2.6 kilograms of heroin.
