President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ordered the construction of the National Forensics Institute (NFI) at the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila in January.
The NFI aims to strengthen the administration of justice by providing scientific evidence for legal proceedings.
During the NFI's launching ceremony on Wednesday, June 18, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin highlighted its role in strengthening domestic accountability mechanisms for human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances.
He also mentioned that the institute's establishment was a pledge made during the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Geneva in December 2023.
DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla emphasized the institute's role in determining causes of death and supporting convictions or acquittals.
The NFI's core faculty will consist of forensic pathologists Dr. Racquel Fortun and Dr. Cecilia Lim, with contributions from experts at UP and Australia's Monash University.
UP President Angelo Jimenez stated that the NFI aligns with the goal of fostering a justice system rooted in human rights, transparency, and accountability.
