Typhoon Ofel makes landfall in Cagayan, weakens over Babuyan Islands

Typhoon Ofel, internationally known as Usagi, made landfall in Baggao, Cagayan on Thursday afternoon and further weakened while passing through the Babuyan Islands on Thursday night.

As of 11 p.m. Thursday, Ofel had maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts reaching 200 kph, and was moving northwestward at 15 kph.

The typhoon is expected to re-enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Saturday afternoon or evening before making landfall in Taiwan.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 4 was hoisted over Babuyan Islands and the northern and eastern portions of mainland Cagayan, while TCWS no. 3 was in effect for Batanes, the rest of Cagayan, and parts of Isabela, Apayao, and Ilocos Norte.

Ofel is forecast to turn northward on Friday over the sea west of Batanes, then northeastward over the sea east of Taiwan during the weekend.
