Trade chief wants younger kids out to boost economy

Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez is pushing again to relax age restrictions, allowing younger individuals to go out, to stimulate consumer demand and aid economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lopez believes that children as young as 10 years old are capable of understanding and adhering to necessary health protocols.

Previously, minors were not permitted to leave their homes in Metro Manila, but this was later adjusted to include individuals aged 15 to 65.

Acting Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Chua noted that the existing age limitations have negatively impacted market demand, as children play a considerable role in family consumption.

Lopez emphasized that a gradual and safe easing of these restrictions is necessary to help the economy return to pre-pandemic levels.
