Taal Volcano has minor phreatic eruption, remains under Alert Level 1

Taal Volcano experienced a minor phreatic eruption last Thursday night, remaining under Alert Level 1.

The eruption lasted for four minutes, from 9:18 p.m. to 9:22 p.m., producing a 1.5-kilometer-tall volcanic plume that drifted northwest.

Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol stated that phreatic eruptions can occur unmonitored and without warning when conditions are right.

No ashfall was reported in nearby areas, indicating the ash settled within the volcano island.

While phreatic eruptions are becoming normal for Taal, their frequency has decreased compared to last year.

The volcano also recorded four volcanic tremors in the preceding 24 hours, with durations ranging from one to seven minutes.

Taal emitted approximately 3,369 tons of sulfur dioxide flux, and has shown long-term deflation of the caldera with short-term inflation on its southeastern flank.
