Super typhoon Leon intensifies, may make landfall in Batanes

Super typhoon Leon, internationally known as Kong-Rey, has intensified over the Philippine Sea, packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kph and gusts of up to 230 kph.

As of Wednesday morning, Leon was located 350 kilometers east of Calayan, Cagayan, moving west-northwestward at 10 kph.

PAGASA has warned that Leon will be closest to Batanes from late Wednesday evening to early Thursday morning, with a landfall in the area remaining a possibility.

Signal No. 3 has been raised in Batanes, eastern portion of Babuyan Islands, and northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan.

Signal No. 2 remains in effect in several other areas in Luzon, including parts of Isabela, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Mountain Province, and Ilocos Norte.

The storm is forecast to make landfall along the eastern coast of Taiwan on Thursday afternoon and is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Friday morning.
