The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) reported the detection of the possible sinking site of the MT Princess Empress oil tanker, approximately 1,200 feet or 400 meters below sea level, northeast of Pola town in Oriental Mindoro province.

An oil spill boom has been installed by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in the suspected location of the sunken vessel off Naujan, Oriental Mindoro to aid in containment and recovery operations.

The sunken vessel was carrying 800,000 liters of industrial oil and sank due to strong waves on February 28.

The depth of the sinking site, around 400 meters, makes it too deep for divers to reach.

Twenty-three individuals in Pola, Oriental Mindoro have been hospitalized due to respiratory illnesses attributed to the oil spill.
