Smart to offer satellite SMS in remote areas via Lynk Global partnership

Smart Communications, through a partnership with Lynk Global, is set to offer satellite SMS services to its subscribers in remote areas, enabling communication even without a cellular signal.

This new service will utilize satellites to connect directly to ordinary mobile phones, initially allowing for SMS and mobile application usage in areas with no existing cell service.

The initiative aims to enhance connectivity and safety for communities in currently out-of-coverage locations, especially during emergencies.

PLDT chief operating officer Menardo Jimenez stated that the partnership aims to allow Smart Communications customers to send and receive messages even when their cell signals are erratic.

The end goal of the collaboration is to extend voice and data connectivity to subscribers in areas where cell coverage is weak, with Lynk providing the technology and PLDT rolling out the network over the next few years.

Full mobile voice and data connectivity are anticipated to be available in the coming years as the Lynk satellite Direct to Device network completes its rollout.

Smart and Lynk will conduct laboratory tests, establish roaming connections, and perform field trials before a phased implementation of the service.
