Smart pilots Philippines first optical transport network disaggregation

Smart Communications Inc., a subsidiary of PLDT Inc., has successfully piloted the Philippines' first optical transport network disaggregation technology.

This test, conducted at the PLDT-Smart Technolab in Makati, moves Smart closer to achieving a fully disaggregated transport network aimed at enhancing customer experience.

Network disaggregation empowers telcos to select hardware and software from various vendors, fostering a blend of top-tier solutions to boost performance, cut costs, and accelerate service deployment.

The successful optical disaggregation test validates the potential of these technologies, building on previous IP transport disaggregation experiments.

This initiative supports Smart's objective of establishing a cost-efficient, disaggregated network architecture and an open, vendor-neutral transport infrastructure that is future-ready and scalable.

Smart and PLDT are actively promoting open and disaggregated network designs, aligning with their adoption of Open RAN and Cloud-Native Core technologies.

Unlike conventional networks reliant on a single supplier, disaggregated systems utilize interchangeable components from multiple providers, facilitating quicker upgrades and greater flexibility.
