Sens back Duterte's ECQ extension until May 15

Several senators supported President Rodrigo Duterte's decision to extend the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila and other high-risk areas until May 15.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian stated that the ECQ extension in high-risk areas provides the government with more time to improve its testing capabilities to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Gatchalian also mentioned that easing the ECQ in low-risk areas or provinces with no COVID-19 cases would permit small and medium businesses to gradually resume operations, enabling them to earn income and reduce reliance on government aid.

Senator Sonny Angara commented that Duterte was exercising necessary caution and diligence, basing the decision on consultations with experts and department heads, and data from other countries.

Angara added that countries which prematurely relaxed their quarantines experienced a resurgence of virus outbreaks, thus negating initial gains.
